Shoplifting is a serious concern for shop owners. Many stores already employ CCTV technology to monitor activity in the shop. This is very similar to how cities such as London employ CCTV to promote public safety. The Japanese telecom company NTT East recently teamed with Earth Eyes to create AI Guardsman, a machine learning agent that tries to identify shoplifters. The system uses cameras around the store to track every customer. It uses machine learning and computer vision to search for suspicious activity. Once such activity is detected, the system informs the store’s security. A security person can then look at the specific suspicious activity provided by the system as a short clip to determine whether an action is necessary.
